Event: AI Act – navigating key requirements

The AI Act was voted on 13th June 2024 and will enter into force on 1st August. The EU AI Act is the result of years of political, legal and technical debate and negotiation. In a field as complex and quickly evolving as AI, the impact on operational compliance, particularly when the law inevitably introduces novel questions is significant.

The AI Act is designed to ensure that AI development and deployment are safe, trustworthy, transparent, and respectful of fundamental rights, while also fostering progress and innovation in this transformative field. It establishes unified EU regulations for introducing AI systems to the market, implementing them, and regulating their use. The act bans certain AI practices entirely and imposes specific requirements on operators of various AI systems and general-purpose AI models.

Similar to the EU General Data Protection Regulation, the AI Act has a broad territorial scope, affecting operators both within and outside the EU. It includes substantial sanctions, such as hefty financial penalties, and a robust regulatory enforcement framework. In the coming years, many elements of the AI Act are expected to set the global standard for AI regulation, making it crucial for organizations worldwide to understand its requirements early on.
